Jr Warriors Weekly Update!

Hello Junior Warriors Families…

What a week! Thanks to everyone for their flexibility as we deal with the Wayland pool being closed. As I write this, I am happy to report that the town began to refill the pool today. Once filled, it will take several days to heat. With any luck, the pool will be reopened this weekend.  I will keep you updated.

We had a great meet with Thoreau last weekend bringing our record to 3-0. The kids swam fast and many of the older kids swam up an age group to make up for our missing high school swimmers. Thanks to all the parents for their help at the meet.

News for this week…

·   Swimmers of the Week – This week’s swimmers of the week are Sammy and Alex Karle. This brother/sister team continues to amaze the coaches at their willingness and flexibility to swim whatever event we need them to swim at meets. This past weekend, both swam up in 15/18 events so that we were able to score points in those events. In other meets they always swim whatever event they are entered in with a smile on their face…even if it isn’t their favorite event. Sammy and Alex are true team players. Congratulations to them both!

·   Practice This Week – We have secured some pool space for our Tues/Thurs practices this week. Here is the schedule:

Tuesday (Location:  Atkinson Pool, 40 Fairbank Rd, Sudbury – 4 lanes)

–5:00-5:30 – 6&unders
–5:15-6:00 – 7/8s
–6:00-7:00 – 9/10s

**No practice 6th/7th/8th grade

Thursday (Location:  Bosse Sports, 141 Boston Post Rd, Sudbury - 4 lanes)

–7:00-7:45 – 6th/7th grade
–7.45-8:30 – 8th grade

**No practice 6&unders, 7/8s and 9/10s

(FYI…no shower facilities are available at Bosse so please come with your suits on and ready to wear them home as well.)

·   Next Meet – Our next meet is Saturday against Suburban. With any luck, the meet will be at the Wayland pool. However, we do have a backup location (Babson College) just in case our own pool is not open by then. If we do swim in Wayland, the schedule is:
–    Arrival Time – 12:40 pm
–    Warm Up – 1:00 pm
–    Meet Starts – 1:30 pm

(NOTE: If we end up needing to swim at Babson, the meet will not begin until a few hours later in the afternoon.) I will have a meet sign up sheet at both the Tuesday and Thursday practice locations this week. If your kids will not be at practice, please let me know via email whether they will be attending the meet.

·   Focus of the Week – Our focus this week continues to be freestyle. We will be working on good form, good turns and breath control. We will also be talking about swimming straight in races (i.e., on top of the black line). Ask your swimmers about it!

That is the news for this week! Again, thank you for your patience!

Weekly Update from Coach Jeanne, 12/1/09

Hello Jr Warriors families!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! As we head into the holidays I hope that everyone can take some time and enjoy the season. News for this week…

  • Swimmer of the Week – This week’s swimmer of the week is Katie Cundari. The coaches have noticed what a wonderful job Katie has done over these past weeks making the new members of our team feel welcome. She never hesitates to help explain swim sets to them, she helps them know the right time to leave the wall and she is a friendly face when they get to the pool each day. Katie is an excellent example of what a team is all about. Congratulations Katie!
  • Next Meet – Our next meet is an away meet against Thoreau in Concord (Sat., Dec. 5th). Meet times are:
–          Arrival Time – 4:40 pm
–          Warm Up – 5:00 pm
–          Meet Starts – 5:30 pm

Thoreau has an eight lane pool so the meet should go more quickly than our home meets. The address is:
275 Forest Ridge Road, Concord, MA  01742, (978) 369-7349
Please sign up for the meet on the bulletin board. As always, we will need some volunteers to help with the meet so sign up for that as well.

  • Focus of the Week – Our focus this week continues to be freestyle. We will be working on good form, good turns and breath control. We will also be talking about swimming straight in races (i.e., on top of the black line). Ask your swimmers about it!
  • The Pool – Some of your swimmers may have mentioned that the pool has been a bit cooler lately.   That is true. There has been a problem with the heater. It should be fixed sometime this week.
  • High School Swimming/Showers – The high school team begins practicing this week. The younger swimmers will see the high school kids in the water just before our practice begins. The load on the pool increases greatly when the high school begins and it is VERY important we all shower before we get into the pool. It is an old facility and we need to help keep it running as smoothly as possible!!
  • Team Suits – The remaining team suits should really be here this week!
  • Lobby Monitor Shifts – The lobby monitor shifts are posted next to the bulletin board. Please check the list for your shift. If you are unable to make your shift, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

That is the news for this week! See you at the pool!

Weekly Update from Coach Jeanne, 11/23/09

Hello Junior Warriors Families!

Another great meet this weekend! The kids looked very strong and we had some fast times…especially for this early in the season. We as coaches are especially impressed at how the kids support one another in their races…it is wonderful to see. Thanks to all the volunteers for making the meet a success…we had about 270 swimmers in the meet (compared to 180 last week) so everyone’s help was invaluable.

News for this week…
  • Swimmers of the Week – This week we have two swimmers of the week, Nick Fay and Daly Place. Nick showed incredible flexibility when asked at the last minute to fill in on a relay (his second of the day) and he didn’t hesitate. Yet when it came time for the relay, he gave his spot to a younger swimmer who had not gotten to swim on a relay in an earlier event due to some confusion. Nick was a true team player! Daly volunteered to help organize the relays for the younger kids. She did a wonderful job and was such a help as we were short handed when it came to putting the relays together. Congratulations Nick and Daly!
  • Focus of the Week – Our focus this week shifts to freestyle. We will be working on good form, good turns and breath control. We will also be talking about swimming straight in races (i.e., on top of the black line). Ask your swimmers about it!
  • Thanksgiving Week Schedule – Our schedule for this week is:
–          Tuesday, 11/24 – Practice as usual
–          Thursday, 11/26 – NO PRACTICE…HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
–          Sunday. 11/29 – Practice as usual
(**NOTE: We are NOT doing time trials this year since we have already had 2 meets)
  • Next Meet – Our next meet is Saturday, Dec. 5th at 5:00 pm at Thoreau in Concord. Please note the late start time!!
  • Showers – We need your help! The town has asked us to have all swimmers shower before entering the pool. This will help reduce the contaminants that get into the pool and will put less stress on the pool. Our facility is very old and is running on borrowed time…so we need to do everything we can to keep it running through March! Please remind your swimmers to shower before coming out to the pool deck.
  • Team Suits – The remaining team suits should be here this week.
  • Lobby Monitor Shifts – The lobby monitor shifts are posted next to the bulletin board. Please check the list for your shift. If you are unable to make your shift, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.
That is it for this week! Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Weekly Update from Coach Jeanne, 11/17/09

Hello Jr Warriors families!

Thanks to everyone for making our first meet a success! All the kids swam so well which was great to see after only two weeks of practice. New members of the team had a few jitters before their first race, but all seemed to come through it well and were able to relax once that first race was done. Thanks to the many parents who volunteered and helped make the meet run smoothly.

This week’s news…
  • Swimmer of the Week – Every week we select a swimmer of the week based upon something he or she has done that goes above and beyond. This week’s swimmer of the week is Marlee Griffin. Marlee’s goggles came off during one of her races in our meet…and she didn’t let it phase her. She kept on swimming her race without worrying about fixing her goggles. She is a true example of what to do when you have an equipment problem in a race…just keep swimming! Congratulations Marlee!
  • Focus of the Week – We will be focusing on streamlines for one more week. Our streamlines improve with each practice…encourage your kids to keep it up!
  • Next Meet – Our next meet is this Saturday, Nov. 21st:
–          Arrival Time: 12:10 pm
–          Warm Up: 12:20 pm
–          Meet Starts: 1:00 pm
PLEASE MARK THE SIGN UP LIST AS TO WHETHER YOUR SWIMMER WILL BE AT THE MEET. As always, all swimmers age 7 and up are in relays at the end and will be expected to stay for the relays. We will also need our usual group of volunteers…so please sign up for that as well.
  • Food – We need your help with food at the pool. There is absolutely no food allowed in the locker rooms. Unfortunately the cleaning service has found pizza crusts, gummy bears and candy wrappers in the locker rooms (the girls are the biggest problem). We risk losing the ability to have pizza nights and a meet snack bar if we cannot keep food out of the locker rooms. Please remind your swimmer of this!
  • Team Suits – Most team suits are in. The remaining suits should arrive this week. If you do not have your suit, please see Jeanne.
  • Caps – Just a reminder that caps are to be worn in both practices and meets by all girls and any boys with long hair. Each swimmer is given one team cap. Additional caps are $5 each. Please see Jeanne if you have not gotten your cap.
  • Lobby Monitor Shifts – The lobby monitor shifts are posted next to the bulletin board. Please check the list for your shift. If you are unable to make your shift, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

That is it for this week! See everyone at the pool!

Weekly Update from Coach Jeanne, 11/10/09

Hello Junior Warriors families!

We are off to a great start! The kids look really good in the pool and our new team members seem to be assimilating well. For those of you who are new to the team, we send these email updates at the beginning of each week to keep you up to date on what is happening. So here we go…

  • Focus of the Week – Every week all age groups will be focusing on one particular skill during practices. This week’s focus is streamlining, a very important part of swimming. Ask your swimmer about it!!
  • First Meet – Our first meet is this Saturday against Wayside at our pool.
–          Arrival Time: 11:40 am
–          Warm Up: 11:50 am
–          Meet Starts: 12:30 pm
It is important that swimmers arrive on time to the meet. They will check in at the table in the lobby to get their event numbers and then will come out to the pool deck ready to swim. We warm up by age group and will direct the kids accordingly. A sign up list for the meet will be posted Tuesday on the bulletin board. PLEASE MARK THE SIGN UP LIST AS TO WHETHER YOUR SWIMMER WILL BE AT THE MEET. Meets typically last 2.5 hours and all swimmers age 7 and up are in relays at the end and will be expected to stay for the relays. Feel free to contact Jeanne with questions.
  • Volunteers – We need many volunteers to run the meet successfully. A sign up sheet for that will be posted as well…please sign up!
  • Lobby Monitor Shifts – The lobby monitor shifts are posted next to the bulletin board. We began with the letter “M” this year (there is a method to this!!). Please check the list for your shift. If you are unable to make your shift, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.
  • Team Suits – Team suits should be in on Thursday.
  • Transitions – Many of you have noticed that we are using a similar scheduling technique to last year where the age group practices overlap with each other by 15 minutes. Each group only overlaps once (either the beginning or end of their practice).   We are also starting practices from the block end of the pool this year so swimmers can do a perfect dive to start off practice. Everyone should be at the deep end ready to go (caps and goggles on) at the start time of their practice.
  • Pizza Night – Thursday pizza nights are back! Thanks to Jennifer Mcleod and Maureen Tillett for organizing this popular weekly event this year. On Thursdays, pizza will be sold during all practices for $2/slice. A night off from cooking!

That is it for this week! As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.
