Weekly Update from Coach Jeanne, Week of December 21

Hello Junior Warriors families!

The holidays are upon us…wow! And so is the snow! Hope everyone enjoyed the snowy weekend. News for this week…

  • Swimmer of the Week – This week’s swimmer of the week is Ava Khadjenoori. Ava started swimming with the team last year as a 7th grader. She works incredibly hard in practice…last week we did some longer distances with 200s and Ava pushed each and every 200. In meets, she is always willing to swim whatever is needed. She often “gets” to swim butterfly which she always does with a smile on her face despite it not being her favorite stroke. She attends most every practice and meet and she is a true team player. Congratulations Ava!

  • Practice Schedule – For this week:
    • –Tuesday, Dec. 22nd – Practice as usual
    • –Thursday, Dec. 24th – NO PRACTICE…MERRY CHRISTMAS!
We will offer some optional practices over the holiday break and are just confirming pool time. Watch your email for a schedule!

  • Next Meet – Our next meet is Jan. 9th at home.

  • Caps – Please take a moment to make sure your girls (and boys with long hair) have caps in their swim bags. We have a number of girls who show up for practice without a cap.  We can usually scrounge around and find one for them to use, but if they could actually come with a cap it would be great! Caps are required in the pool. Thanks!

  • Ribbons – Please check the file bins for your meet ribbons.

  • Website – Many, many thanks to Kim Reichelt for updating and maintaining our Jr. Warriors website. If you haven’t had a chance, check it out at www.waylandjw.com. We plan to add meet results to the site and would love your feedback on other things we can add. Thank you Kim!

  • New Pool Party – By now, all of you should have received an invitation to the “pool party” on Jan. 9th for the new pool. It will be a fun night for everyone! Please remember to RSVP. And if you need another copy of the invitation, go to www.waylandcommunitypool.org for the online version.

  • Lobby Monitor Shifts – The lobby monitor shifts are posted next to the bulletin board. Please check the list for your shift. If you are unable to make your shift, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. Thanks for your help with this!

That is it for this week! Best wishes to all of you for a wonderful, restful and joyful holiday!

Jr. Warriors Weekly Update, December 15, 2009

Hello Jr Warriors families!

We had a nice meet last weekend.  Lots of swimmers got a chance to swim events that they don’t normally swim and despite some pushback from some of the kids, they all swam really well.  Many, many thanks to all the parents who helped with the meet.  You all plan a vital role in making things go smoothly.  Suburban commented on what a good meet we ran and frankly, it is the result of all parents who step up to help.  Thanks!  Our next meet is not until January 9th…enjoy the free Saturdays!

News for the week…

***TUESDAY PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGE…SEE BELOW****

  • Swimmers of the Week – This week’s swimmers of the week are Daniel Lavenson, Rosie Kiefer, Matthew Karle, Becca Wuerfl, Anna Downs and Blake Welti.  All of these swimmers were asked at the last minute to fill in on relays where there were sudden holes (swimmers who had to leave early or who hadn’t come to the meet).  Daniel, Rosie, Matthew, Becca, Anna and Blake did not hesitate at all to run and be part of a relay at the last minute…in a few cases, some of them had to put their suits back on to swim!  What their actions meant is that the rest of the swimmers on those relays were still able to swim in a relay.  Congratulations to Daniel, Rosie, Matthew, Becca, Anna and Blake for being selfless and true team players!

  • Tuesday Practice Change – There is a high school meet Tuesday, Dec. 15th at the pool.  Our schedule will change as follows:

–    6&unders – NO PRACTICE
–    7/8s – NO PRACTICE
–    9/10s – Practice as usual
–    6th/7th/8th grade – Practice as usual

  • Pool Protocol – As you all know, we are back in the pool.  The DPW worked tirelessly to get the pool up and running and it looks great.  There are a few things we need to do to help keep the pool clean and running smoothly until March…

–    Showers – All swimmers must take a soap shower before entering the pool.
–    Foot Traffic – We need to minimize the street shoes that are on the pool deck.  Please limit the foot traffic (with shoes) to the bleacher area.
–    Use of facilities – Please remind your swimmers to use the facilities before they get into the pool.
–    Caps – All girls (and boys with long hair) MUST wear caps.  Please help your swimmers remember their caps.

If we all work together on this, we will minimize the likelihood for any problems at the pool in the next few months.

  • Focus of the Week – The coaches made several observations at the meet this weekend that we have talked to the kids about…holding the ready position on starts, keeping heads still in breaststroke, and not breathing from the flags to the wall in freestyle.  The observations are posted at the pool.  Take a minute to read them and ask your swimmer about them!

  • Lobby Monitor Shifts – The lobby monitor shifts are posted next to the bulletin board.  Please check the list for your shift.  If you are unable to make your shift, it

That is it for this week!  See you at the pool!

Update on Pool

Hi Jr Warriors families,

I wanted to pass on a letter from Don Oulette, Wayland DPW director, with an update on the pool.  When the letter refers to specific practices, Don is referring to the high school practices last week.  He also provides this link with additional information:  http://www.waterandhealth.org/newsletter/cleaning_air.html

As far as when the pool will reopen, it is looking like we may be back in there this weekend.  We will know for sure tomorrow afternoon and I will let all of you know about the Saturday meet as soon as I hear from the town re: the pool.

Thanks for your continued patience with all of this!!

Jr Warriors Weekly Update!

Hello Junior Warriors Families…

What a week! Thanks to everyone for their flexibility as we deal with the Wayland pool being closed. As I write this, I am happy to report that the town began to refill the pool today. Once filled, it will take several days to heat. With any luck, the pool will be reopened this weekend.  I will keep you updated.

We had a great meet with Thoreau last weekend bringing our record to 3-0. The kids swam fast and many of the older kids swam up an age group to make up for our missing high school swimmers. Thanks to all the parents for their help at the meet.

News for this week…

·   Swimmers of the Week – This week’s swimmers of the week are Sammy and Alex Karle. This brother/sister team continues to amaze the coaches at their willingness and flexibility to swim whatever event we need them to swim at meets. This past weekend, both swam up in 15/18 events so that we were able to score points in those events. In other meets they always swim whatever event they are entered in with a smile on their face…even if it isn’t their favorite event. Sammy and Alex are true team players. Congratulations to them both!

·   Practice This Week – We have secured some pool space for our Tues/Thurs practices this week. Here is the schedule:

Tuesday (Location:  Atkinson Pool, 40 Fairbank Rd, Sudbury – 4 lanes)

–5:00-5:30 – 6&unders
–5:15-6:00 – 7/8s
–6:00-7:00 – 9/10s

**No practice 6th/7th/8th grade

Thursday (Location:  Bosse Sports, 141 Boston Post Rd, Sudbury - 4 lanes)

–7:00-7:45 – 6th/7th grade
–7.45-8:30 – 8th grade

**No practice 6&unders, 7/8s and 9/10s

(FYI…no shower facilities are available at Bosse so please come with your suits on and ready to wear them home as well.)

·   Next Meet – Our next meet is Saturday against Suburban. With any luck, the meet will be at the Wayland pool. However, we do have a backup location (Babson College) just in case our own pool is not open by then. If we do swim in Wayland, the schedule is:
–    Arrival Time – 12:40 pm
–    Warm Up – 1:00 pm
–    Meet Starts – 1:30 pm

(NOTE: If we end up needing to swim at Babson, the meet will not begin until a few hours later in the afternoon.) I will have a meet sign up sheet at both the Tuesday and Thursday practice locations this week. If your kids will not be at practice, please let me know via email whether they will be attending the meet.

·   Focus of the Week – Our focus this week continues to be freestyle. We will be working on good form, good turns and breath control. We will also be talking about swimming straight in races (i.e., on top of the black line). Ask your swimmers about it!

That is the news for this week! Again, thank you for your patience!

Practice Schedule this week (week starting December 7)

Hi everyone…

Many, many thanks for your patience and flexibility with the pool this week.  This week we've found some limited pool space…so we are going to split the team up into 2 different practice days.  Because of the limited space, I need to request that everyone come only to their regularly assigned practice times.  Please let me know if you have any questions!!

Practice / Meet Wrap-Up

Hi everyone…

Thanks to everyone for coming out to Thoreau on a snowy Saturday evening!  The team swam really well and it was a very close meet.  The 8 lanes made the meet go very quickly…cannot wait for the new Wayland pool with at least that many lanes!

A quick reminder about Sunday (tomorrow).  Since the Wayland pool is still closed, all swimmers age 9&up will practice at Atkinson pool in Sudbury from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. (NOTE:  We are unable to have any kids under age 9 at the practice…sorry!)

Again, we know that some of you have other commitments tomorrow.  But for those of you who can make practice, we look forward to seeing you at Atkinson!

Jr Warrior Practice Update

Hi everyone…

We have been able to secure a bit of pool time Sunday at Atkinson Pool in Sudbury.  We will have 8 lanes but only for an hour so unfortunately we won't be able to accomodate everyone at the practice.  So here is the plan:
  • 6&unders – NO PRACTICE
  • 7/8 year olds – NO PRACTICE
  • 9/10 year olds – practice from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
  • 6th/7th/8th graders – practice from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
We realize that this timing is not ideal, but it is the only time/place we can get on Sunday.  And so far we have been unable to secure practice times/locations for Tuesday and Thursday (although we are still working on it).  We would love for as many kids (ages 9&up) as possible to come to practice Sunday…but we do understand that many of you may have existing commitments and may not be able to come.   (NOTE:  We are unable to accomodate any swimmers under 9 for this practice…sorry!)

Atkinson Pool is located at 40 Fairbanks Road in Sudbury.  More info about Atkinson Pool can be found at http://sudbury.ma.us/services/department_home.asp?dept=Pool

Thanks for being flexible!  Please let me know if you have any questions!

Town Pool Status Update

Hi everyone…

I just wanted to give you an update on the town pool and our upcoming practices.  Last night and this morning, the town drained the pool.  They plan to clean the interior of the pool and then refill it with new water.  Once filled, it will need some time to warm up.  This process will take a minimum of a week.  The town has made getting the pool up and running again a priority and are doing their best to minimize the time it is closed.

So…what does that mean for Jr Warriors practices??  We are trying to secure some pool time at another local pool for the next week.  As soon as we have a concrete plan for our practices, we will let you know.  Thanks for your patience with this!!

Jeanne

P.S.  If you have not done so already, PLEASE let me know whether your kids will be swimming in the meet Saturday.

P.S.S.  I have all the missing suits and will bring them on Saturday.

No Junior Warriors Practice Thursday (12/3)!

Hi everyone…

Just a quick note to let you know two things:
  • No practice tomorrow (Thursday 12/3)
  • Meet is still ON for Saturday, 12/5 at Thoreau
In a nutshell, there are some water quality issues at the Wayland pool that have caused its closure.  The town is diligently working to fix the problem so that we can be back in the water as soon as possible.  I will send more details tomorrow.

We will still have our meet on Saturday at Thoreau.  If you did not have a chance to sign up for the meet (yes or no), please email me ASAP as to whether your swimmer(s) will be attending.

Sorry for the inconvenience!!

Jeanne
